NET INCOME AND COMPREHENSIVE INCOME AS INDICATORS OF FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE QUALITY: EVIDENCE FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE

Vladimir Stančić, Nemanja Karapavlović, Veljko Dmitrović

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to examine whether components of other comprehensive income in case of insurance companies make the amount of comprehensive income significantly different from its net income and whether comprehensive income is more volatile in time than net income. The authors examine insurance companies (life, non-life and companies performing both insurance activities) from the chosen Southeast European countries (Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia). The authors generally find statistically significant difference between amounts of comprehensive income and net income. However, they don't confirm statistically significant differences in all three research levels (sample, country and insurance activity). On average, comprehensive income is more volatile than net income. However, at some research levels they find almost the same volatility of net income and comprehensive income.
